Wilcox as a reading instructor, particularly with respect to instruction using Orton Gillingham concepts and her ability to work with students with special needs. We base this recommendation on Ms. Wilcox\u2019s successful work with our special needs child beginning in February 2020. Ms. Wilcox began working with our child when they were a nine-year old third-grader. At the time, our child had been diagnosed with mixed-type dyslexia, mixed type dysgraphia, autism spectrum disorder, anxiety disorder, and ADHD inattentive type. We engaged Ms. Wilcox, through her employer Educational Connections, because our child needed evidence-based phonics instruction to address his decoding, encoding, and prosody weaknesses arising from his special needs. Ms. Wilcox, on average, provided our child two to four hours of instruction per-week, both inperson and through Zoom, from February 2020 to August 2022 when our child began school in a therapeutic boarding setting out of the area. For most sessions, Ms. Wilcox used a structured lesson plan that used multi-sensory techniques. A portion of most sessions involved our child handwriting ten words and sentences focusing on the letter sounds taught in the lesson. During the pandemic, Ms. Wilcox often also worked with our child one hour per week on our child\u2019s ability to read-aloud with appropriate fluency and to reinforce his decoding skills. In those reading sessions, Ms. Wilcox also engaged in discussions with our child about the substance of the books they were reading together during those sessions. Our child made significant progress over the 2 \u00bd years that they worked intensively with Ms. Wilcox. Ms. Wilcox\u2019s organized, multi-sensory, and structured approach to her lessons helped our special needs child stay focused during the lesson. Moreover, our child\u2019s decoding and encoding skills, their ability to read fluently, and their handwriting improved appreciably due to their work with Ms. Wilcox. Ms. Wilcox and our child also developed a close relationship on a personal level despite our child being an autistic person. As result of these improvements, our child was successful academically in their therapeutic boarding and residential treatment settings between September 2022 and July 2024. Moreover, our child\u2019s neuropsychological testing in the Spring of 2024 confirmed our child\u2019s improvement in decoding and encoding skills and did not include a finding of dyslexia. Our child has attended an alternative middle school \/ high school locally since September 2024 and continues to do well academically. Since our child\u2019s return to the area, Ms. Wilcox has resumed reading aloud with our child, generally for 45 minutes to an hour a week, to reinforce their reading progress.
