About Julia
Volunteering as a general tutor for 2nd and 3rd graders at her local elementary school, Julia quickly became fascinated with the discrepancy with which some of her young learners could read or not. Kids with access to the same teachers and methods were vastly different in their capabilities.
In 2019, Julia found Orton Gillingham and a very effective mentor. Her fascination grew and she decided that she would dedicate her work solely towards literacy. Through Orton Gillingham, she learned to use explicit, direct, sequential, systematic, multi-sensory instruction to teach reading, which is not only effective for all students but essential for teaching students with dyslexia.
In addition to tutoring students through her private practice, she also continues to volunteer at her local public elementary school. She has pledged to continue to volunteer her skills for struggling young learners without access to formal reading instructional methods. She has seen first hand how her influence with children with learning differences or non-native English speaking students can change the trajectory of their educational experience academically, behaviorally and socially.
Julia is outgoing and friendly. She is an avid fly fisherman. Additionally, she recently discovered ballroom dancing and has fallen for the pageantry and glitter. However, she is just as happy casting flies in a swiftly moving river or wading in silence on a clear blue atoll. Julia’s first career was in the publishing industry in New York City working at magazines including Rolling Stone, Vogue, Vanity Fair and National Geographic.
